How Lauderdale Design Group Transformed a Traditional Kitchen into a Vibrant Social Hub

When Alaina Smith and Ryan Schaefer decided to renovate their kitchen, they wanted more than just a functional space—they envisioned a creative, open kitchen that would serve as the heart of their home.

With a vision in mind, they turned to Lauderdale Design Group to transform their cramped, dated kitchen into a vibrant, spacious hub for cooking, entertaining, and living. The result is a stunning blend of mid-century modern elements, bold patterns, and personal touches, making this kitchen a true reflection of the couple's unique personalities.

The redesign merged two small, existing rooms into a bright and airy kitchen/dining space that spans 472 square feet. At the heart of the design is a striking backsplash made from Concrete Collaborative’s Dwell x Strands collection of tiles, which homeowner Alaina likens to “stepping into a David Hockney painting.” Inspired by surfboard shapes, the geometric tiles bring a playful pop of cobalt blue to the space, creating a focal point that contrasts beautifully with the warm, neutral tones of the rest of the kitchen.

Interior designer Dani Miller balanced the boldness of the tiles with warm materials like stained maple veneer cabinetry and a timber floor, which tie the space back to the home’s mid-century roots. The kitchen’s color palette was carefully selected to let the tiles shine, with restrained, elegant fixtures and cabinetry that evoke mid-century modern vibes without competing with the statement tiles. The end result is a vibrant, functional kitchen that embodies the creative spirits of Alaina, founder of Cold Gold, and Ryan, a musician and software designer.

The new kitchen has become a favorite gathering place for the couple, whether they’re hosting summer soirées or holiday celebrations. As Dani Miller puts it, “It’s a space that keeps on giving”—a space where design, creativity, and family life seamlessly come together.
